Do you know the traditional sweets of the Swedish “coffee ritual”?

Thanks to the book “Baka”, I’ve discovered quite a few things I didn’t know. I wasn’t aware that Sweden has a strong coffee tradition or that some of the pastries we often see in bakeries are actually Swedish by origin. But that’s how it is. Every food culture holds some delightful surprises!

I had never considered including a cookbook branded by a global furniture company in my collection. However, upon reflection, both furniture and cooking stem from the human desire to make everyday life more comfortable. So… why not?

And today, after personally and successfully testing some recipes, I’m here recommending it. For yourself, as a gift, or as inspiration to cook something good for the family. Even for those who don’t feel super-confident in the kitchen, because these recipes are truly accessible to everyone.

“Baka” • A book about simple treats…

Let’s say it right away… visual appeal played a major role! When I saw the minimal and geometric photos aside the ingredient lists, I couldn’t resist. Few clicks and the book was purchased! The recipes presented are very simple cookies, cakes, and pastries. So that, at first glance, I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy baking them – I was wrong, I discovered that even small homemade treats can be very satisfying.

The first experiment has been the checkerboard cookies, that you can find here on “Eat like an Italian”. Instructions beside each recipe are well explained and foolproof, and especially for cookies, following them carefully helps a lot. Next, I tried some small baked doughnuts which are lighter than the fried ones. On my wishlist of recipes yet to try are the cakes, including the iconic Princess Cake that you can also find in Ikea’s dining areas.

Even though I initially bought “Baka” mainly attracted by the beautiful images, I can confirm that there is much more to it. All the sweets are particularly suitable to prepare at home, in a short time, and are very enjoyable for children. It’s a book that I actually use often.

What about Ikea?

A global brand that most people associate with furniture – but whose vision is actually the improvement of lifestyle as a whole. Yes, Ikea also publishes books. Among its products and topics, there is also food. Recipes inspired by Swedish tradition, the country of origin of this company. Dishes that have become a hallmark in the restaurants of every store. There are quite some customers who want to recreate Ikea’s menus at home: if you look carefully, you can find some very nice cookbooks that explain how to do it!
